The UNC Darkside men won the Atlantic Coast regional championship on May 6th and earned the region's only bid to the 2012 USA Ultimate D-I College Championships in Boulder, CO on May 25-28. And they need our help to get there!
All proceeds from this hat tournament will go directly towards the team's costs of representing the Triangle, the state of NC, and the entire Mid-Atlantic region at Nationals. Support them by playing ultimate & invite all of your friends to play too!

Congratulations to Hatchet, winner of the 2012 Spring Core League season and the Bliss Cup! With its short, hammer-perfect handle, the red team captained by Taylor Pope and Sharon Tucker hacked down the competition during Sunday's Spring League playoffs. That makes two Spring League titles in consecutive years for Hatchet and two consecutive league championships for Pope (having won the Winter League championship in February).
Before we get to the weekend's details, the commissioners would like to thank those players who stepped up to captain teams this year. Several captains volunteered or were coerced at the last minute when teams had no one to draft for them. A big "Huzzah!" to all of the captains.
We would also like to thank all the Spring League players for their patience with public-field issues. After our initial run-in with Bethesda Athletic Association, there were no further confrontations regarding dogs or alcohol or trash. In fact, it eventually became clear that the trash problem occurred only on weekends when league games were canceled because of rain.
So, great work, everyone! Thanks for keeping up our reputation with Durham Public Schools. (And please donate to the Ultiplex so we can play un-harassed!)

Spring League 2012 Tournament
As per usual in Spring League, the standings coming out of the regular season weren't entirely representative of team strength. Spring busy-ness and active high school and college seasons prevented full rosters at many of the regular season games.
Complicating the picture were some last minute substitutions that left several teams with replacement players and the green team of LeMuell with essentially new captains for the weekend, Sasha Resnick and Dave Snoke replacing Becky LeDonne and Matthias Mueller. David Trett, unable to play for Black Sabbath (Greene and Mitchell), was replaced by Eric Martin.
The teams met Saturday in two pools of four teams at Lowe's Grove and Bethesda:

The West division's Safety First, captained by Matt Bode and Jesse Lieberman, dominated the day's pool play at Bethesda. Black Sabbath took the pool's second seed, and the graphite-wearing Fool's Gold (Askew and Peed) took third. Although Bethesda Athletic Association never showed up to eject the hairy beasts, injuries and no-shows kept All for the Wookiee (Guthrie) in last place in pool.

LeMuell won the pool at Lowe's Grove decisively, relegating Blue Dogs (Hoyle and Gifford) to second seed and Team Kessler (Faulkner and Kessler) to third.
The Lowe's Grove match-ups took an unexpected turn when three of Hatchet's leading men decided their day would be better spent playing golf, and off they went halfway through the first game of the day. So, missing Taylor Pope, Brian Lang and Mick Ribault, as well as Jon McLeod, who was unable to play on Saturday, Hatchet was left with one male sub. The red team still managed to post 12 points in its loss to Team Kessler, it's closest rival on the day.

Team Kessler, possibly the oldest team ever to complete a TFDA league season, parlayed its extra 112 years of life experience to a universe-point win over the youngest team in the league, Black Sabbath. On the other field, Fool's Gold did indeed turn out to be just graphite, losing cleanly to Blue Dogs, 10-17.
In the second round of quarters, All for the Wookiee got a fresh shot of Brian Brickhouse to replace an injured Pete Wentz and looked to be clawing its way into the semifinals against LeMuell, taking half at 9-8. But LeMuell returned from half with fresh shots all round and a pressure D that allowed only two more Wookiee points. Final score: 17-11, LeMuell.
The top seeded Safety First, expected to advance easily to the semis, would have been a shoo-in but for the Ringer reunion happening on Hatchet, their last-seeded opponent. Expecting fireworks from the captains, spectators lined the field, wondering if Bode v. Pope would be as exciting as Bode v. Proctor had been in Winter League. But even with Matt Bode, Jesse Lieberman and Katy Harris leading the charge, Safety First left the field chopped and bloodied, losing 15-12 at the time cap. Game Highlight: James "Freight Train" Morton leaving his man in the dust for a nearly full-field huck from Lieberman and a leaping back-line catch for the score.
In the semis, LeMuell handled the oldsters of Team Kessler with aplomb, 17-9, and was rewarded with 30 minutes to rest before the finals. Hatchet felled Blue Dogs, 17-12, in a much longer battle that sent the bloody reds into the finals glistening with sweat and complaining about 17-point playoff games.

While temperatures the day before had barely gotten above 65 degrees, with clouds lingering all day, by Sunday afternoon the players were drinking gallons of Gatorade and huddling under parasols. To make matters worse for Hatchet, the game started off with six points of back and forth that featured multiple turnovers and left the score at only 3-3 after 20 minutes.
As the game wore on, Hatchet lost track of the score and began to hallucinate. Several players insisted there were points missing from the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the scorekeeper was too hot and heckled to remember much of the final game besides the exceptional number of turnovers and the fact that Hatchet started gradually to widen its lead. The team's huckers began to find good long cuts, and all of a sudden it was halftime, Hatchet 9 - LeMuell 5.

The bloodbath promised in the opening cheers looked to be taking form, even though play on the field was well spirited. LeMuell didn't gain much traction immediately after the halftime break. Hatchet scored two unanswered points to go up, 11-5. Then began a slow Green march, almost imperceptible. From six points down ... to four points down ... to game point ... another game point ... and another. But at 15-16, LeMuell could stave off the swinging axe no longer. The hatchet was indeed buried to the hilt. Final score: Hatchet 17 - LeMuell 15.
Congratulations once again to the 2012 Bliss Cup winners and defending Spring League champions, Hatchet!

Hopefully, we'll see everyone again soon at Kudzu, the Memorial Day Hat Tournament, &/or in one or more of our Summer Leagues (women's & men's midweek or coed weekend).
TFDA is hosting our first EVER hat tournament on Memorial Day! Come to the Triangle for Kudzu; stay for this hat tournament! All proceeds benefit the Ultiplex project.
We only have 3 fields at Cedar Fork park in Morrisville (smack-dab in the middle of the Triangle), so we will form 6 teams and cap registration after 108 players (and 72 males). 3 pool play games will determine standings for bracket play.
The Triangle was well represented this past weekend in 3 club divisions of the Mid-Atlantic Region, as teams competed for a chance to move on to the USA Ultimate Club Championships in Sarasota, FL on October 27-30.
In our own "back yard" (at Cary Academy), the Master's Division featured 6 teams with guys born no more recently than 1978. Triangle powerhouse, "Boneyard" went undefeated & won another regional championship, defeating DC/Philly combo "Chesapeaked" by a score of 15-11. Raleigh-based team, "Ra," finished in 3rd place with a 4-3 record in their inaugural season, falling to "Chesapeaked" 15-9 in the 2nd place "game to go." 6th placed team, "Marauders" (formed largely of Triangle & VA players by tournament director John Boswell to ensure the region received a 2nd bid to Nationals) very nearly broke seed but lost a nail-biter against Charlotte's "Old N Busted," 15-14. Well done, gentlemen (& the rest of you too)!
Elsewhere just inside the PA border near Wilmington, DE, the Women's Division also featured 3 Triangle-based teams. Powerhouse club "Phoenix" had a perfect 4-0 record in Saturday's pool play, winning each game by 9 or more points. But they fell in the championship to DC's "Scandal," 15-12, before capturing 2nd place & another nationals berth against Philly's "Green Means Go," 15-6. Also representing our community impressively, "Sweet T" & "Ember" each held seed with 3rd place finishes in their respective Saturday pools & each decisively winning their first game in the 2nd place bracket. While "Ember" finished in 6th place after falling in the bracket's 2nd round to "Green Means Go," the ladies of "Sweet T" took down Pittsburgh's "Hot Metal" in a time-capped double-game-universe-point thriller, 10-9, before finishing in 4th place with a 14-11 loss to "Green Means Go." Triangle women captured 3 of the top 6 spots in the region!
Meanwhile at the same venue as the ladies, in the Mixed Division, Raleigh-based "WHagonweel" lost only a single game in pool play to newly formed PA powerhouse, "Termite's Entourage" who went on to earn the region's 2nd bid to nationals behind their in-state PA rival & perennial contender, "AMP." "WHagonweel" then won their first match-up in the 2nd place bracket before falling, 11-12, in a nail-biting double-game-universe point thriller against Pittsburgh's "The Muff 'n Men" and finishing in 8th place in the region.
TFDA & the Triangle ultimate community is very proud of the performance of each team that represented us this past weekend. And we look forward to the successes of 3 more teams from the Triangle (Ring of Fire, Cash Crop, & 2OS) this coming weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Open Division tournament in Poolesville, MD.

The 2010 version of TFDA’s “Semi-Occasional-Sometimes-Annual Corporate Tourney”went off without a hitch this past Sunday, April 11, at Cedar Fork District Park, with last year’s winner, Employees of the State of NC, reprising their 2009 victory with an 11-8 finals performance against IBM team #1, led by Andy Ivory.
Teams participating in this year’s event, in initial seed order, were the following:

3. UNC Employees – Brian Sherry
4. IBM #1 – Andy Ivory
5. IBM #2 – Kristen Dunne and Tom Munoz
6. Federal Gov’t – Andrew Weiner
7. Carolina Outreach – Tom Reid
The unfortunate number of teams required either some creative scheduling or a simple, though unsatisfying round-robin format. The latter was eschewed in favor of a format that permitted pool play and elimination play. Two pools were formed, one of three teams and the other of four. The pools were these:

Play began at 9am, with the expected conclusion to the day being 5pm. Any participation beyond these working hours was not going to be compensated with overtime, hence everyone stayed on schedule. The day dawned with a crisp 40 degree temperature and clear skies, but by 9am the temperature was already well over 60 degrees and climbing, reaching the high 70s by mid-afternoon. There were some slight, variable breezes that wafted through at different times, but none sufficient to produce any concerted effort to use zone defenses as a primary strategy.
While all rounds were 1:20, Pool A attempted to play games to 15, while Pool B played theirs to 11. Results of pool play were these:

The top finisher in Pool B got a bye into quarters while all the other teams crossed over for the quarters round of elimination play. Quarters matchups and results were these:

…which set up a finals match between the State Employees and Big Blue’s #1.

It should be noted that Dave Snoke and Alton Boshoff of the State Team had already departed by the time the finals had rolled around, so IBM#1 faced a somewhat less daunting team. It should also be noted that the State team eschewed even recruiting a ringer woman, while the IBM#1 was solidly fortified with a male and female ringer (Mike Moore and Lauren Gardner).
IBM pulled to State, and the score was quickly ushered in with a handful of passes, first blood going to State, 1-0. IBM answered, then followed with a break to go up 2-1. In the next point, after IBM had regained the disc then lost it at the goal line, a re-set pass was intercepted by IBM’s Kevin Himberger for a Callahan score, giving IBMa cushy 3-1 lead. State battled back over the course of the next three points, with both teams getting multiple possessions during the fray, but the result was three straight for State, and a 4-3 lead. IBM was able to answer with its fourth goal to tie the game at 4s. In another hard-fought pair of points, State was able to go up by two and to take half, 6-4.
Sion Stone of the State team was getting open and delivering lethal shots throughout the entire game, though his production might have been higher had he not been covered so intently by IBM’s Mike Moore. IBM’s Jesse Overby sent a number of long flick shots to the endzone, but they could not find their mark due to good pressure on intended receiver Steve Ridgill. IBM’s Nick Poore and Chrystian Plachco were key playmakers during the second half for IBM, but strong defensive pressure kept them from connecting with Laura Levandoski in the endzone (she seemed to score at least 4 goals in every previous game!).
The second half began on serve, with an IBM score, but after State got its serve point, they broke in the next point, going up 8-5. IBM took its only timeout of the game at this juncture, knowing that State needed only three more goals to end the game. IBM came out with the score they sought, but they could not get a break, and the score incremented for each to 9-6, still State’s advantage. Behind steady, workman-like performances from the State cutters (Jeff Faulkner, Victor Maneilly, and Rocky Payne), each IBM goal was answered in kind, till finally, State’s youngster Daniel Schopler snagged their final goal, putting them at 11-8, and gaining for the team another year of bureaucratic braggadocio. It’s up to the rest of us to ensure that such a victory is not filled out in triplicate in 2011…

The Savage tourney went off as planned on Sunday, Feb. 14th, and it turned out to be a great day (though the fields themselves were less than ideal).
